Best SERP APIs in 2026 for AI and Data Apps
"SERP API" gets used for two quite different products, and buying the wrong kind is the most common mistake in this category. One kind reproduces a search engine's results page faithfully, so you can see what a person searching would see. The other gives your application or model a set of relevant web results, and often the page text behind them, to work with.
This guide explains the difference, tells you which kind fits your project, and compares options using prices from each vendor's own pages. We make Serpex, which is the second kind, and we say plainly below when you should buy something else.
What a SERP API is
SERP stands for search engine results page. A SERP API takes a query, and usually options such as location, language and device, and returns search results as structured data, normally JSON, instead of an HTML page. A typical result carries a title, a URL, a snippet and a position.
What happens beyond that differs a lot between products:
- SERP fidelity. Some APIs preserve a specific engine's page exactly: ads, knowledge panels, "People also ask", local packs, shopping blocks, and the exact order they appeared in.
- Engine and vertical coverage. Some cover many engines and verticals such as Maps, Shopping, News and Scholar.
- Page content. Some return only the results page. Others can also fetch the pages the results link to and return their text, which is what an LLM needs for grounding.
Two different jobs
| SEO and rank tracking | AI and data apps | |
|---|---|---|
| The question you are answering | Where does this URL rank on a specific engine, in a specific place, today? | What does the web say about this, right now? |
| What matters most | An exact reproduction of that engine's page | Relevant results and readable page text |
| Typical buyers | Rank trackers, SEO platforms, ad and SERP-feature monitoring | RAG pipelines, AI agents, research tools, enrichment and monitoring jobs |
| What to buy | A dedicated SEO data provider | A search API built for applications and models |
If you need Google rank tracking, use an SEO data provider
If your product reports keyword positions on Google, monitors SERP features, or tracks competitors' ads, you need an API whose whole job is reproducing that engine's results faithfully. Serpex is not that product. It is a search API for AI and data apps. It does not reproduce any search engine's results page, and the position field in a Serpex response is the rank within Serpex's own result set, not a position on any engine. Do not build a rank tracker on it.
Two dedicated providers to evaluate:
SerpApi
A long-established SERP API focused on faithful search-engine result pages. It preserves ads, knowledge panels and rich result blocks, and covers many engines and verticals, including Maps, Shopping and Scholar. It is the reference choice for rank tracking, where SERP fidelity is the product.
- Price: $3.75 – $25.00 per 1,000 searches depending on plan size, with 2× or 4× pricing on its faster speed modes.
- Free tier: 250 searches per month.
- It returns the results page itself (optionally as markdown) but does not fetch the content of the sites it links to.

DataForSEO
DataForSEO positions its SERP API for rank tracking, keyword research, competitive analysis and SERP feature monitoring. It covers Google, Bing, YouTube, Baidu and other engines, with specialised Google endpoints such as Maps, News and Images.
- Price: $0.0006 per SERP in the Standard Queue, which is bulk-oriented ($0.60 per 1,000); $0.0012 in the Priority Queue; $0.002 in Live mode for real-time results ($2.00 per 1,000).
- Trial: an unlimited trial period with a $1 credit on signup.

How to choose between them: DataForSEO's queued pricing suits large, scheduled rank-tracking jobs that can wait for results. SerpApi's plans suit teams that want live results and a wide set of verticals with minimal setup. Run the same keyword set through both free allowances and compare against what you see in a browser.
If you are building an AI or data app
Here the job is different. Your model or pipeline needs relevant, current results and, usually, the text of the pages behind them. An exact copy of one engine's layout matters less than getting usable content in one step and paying a predictable price for it.
Serpex
Serpex is a search API: real-time web search results as structured JSON, plus page content extraction.
POST /api/searchreturnstitle,url,snippetandpositionfor each result. Withinclude_content: true, the top 5 or 10 results also include their page content as markdown in the same response.POST /api/crawl(the Extract API) returns markdown or HTML for up to 10 URLs you already have.- Python and TypeScript SDKs, plus an MCP server (
serpex-mcp) for agent clients.
Pricing, from our pricing page:
| Tier | Top-ups | Per 1,000 requests |
|---|---|---|
| Starter | $5 – $49 | $0.80 |
| Standard | $50 – $499 | $0.65 |
| Scale | $500 – $1,999 | $0.50 |
| Enterprise | $2,000+ | Custom |
A plain search is 1 credit. Search with page content is 2 credits for 5 pages or 4 credits for 10, billed on what was delivered. Content is best-effort: the docs say it arrives for roughly 79% of requested results, and a failed fetch returns a content_error instead. Errors are never charged, unconfirmed empty results are free, and your organisation's repeated requests within about 5 minutes cost 0 credits. New accounts get 200 free credits with no card required. Start with the docs.
What it does not do: rank tracking, location or device targeting, ads or SERP-feature data, domain or date filter parameters, and PDF extraction.
Brave Search API
Brave's API runs on its own independent index rather than reselling another engine's results. It has a strong public privacy stance, flat pricing of $5.00 per 1,000 calls (including an LLM Context endpoint at the same price), and $5 of free credit each month. Other AI-oriented search APIs
Tavily, Exa, Parallel, Linkup and Perplexity's Sonar are all built for LLM applications, each with a different emphasis: answer synthesis, semantic search, deep-research jobs. They are compared in Best Search APIs for AI Agents and LLMs (2026).
Side-by-side
| API | Built for | Price per 1,000 | Linked page content | Free allowance |

What to check before you buy
- Fidelity, if you need it. Search the same keywords in a browser from the target location and compare them with the API output, including ads and SERP features.
- Live or queued. Queued modes are cheaper but asynchronous. An agent answering a user needs live results.
- What comes back. Links and snippets, or the text of the pages too? If you need text, a second extraction step adds cost and failure cases.
- What is billed. Check how errors, empty results, retries and failed content fetches are charged.
- Location and language. Rank tracking needs precise targeting. Most AI use cases need it less.
A note on the official engine APIs
The search engines' own APIs used to be another option. That route has narrowed: Bing Search APIs were retired on August 11, 2025 (Microsoft), and Google's Custom Search JSON API is closed to new customers, with existing customers given until January 1, 2027 to transition (Google). If you are migrating off either, see our Bing Search API alternative and Google Custom Search API alternative pages.
FAQ
What is the difference between a SERP API and a search API?
In practice, a SERP API usually means an API that reproduces a search engine's results page, and a search API means one that returns relevant web results for an application to use. Some products do both. Decide which you need before comparing prices.
Can I use Serpex for Google rank tracking?
No. Serpex does not reproduce any engine's results page, and its position field is the rank within its own result set. For rank tracking, use a dedicated SEO data provider such as SerpApi or DataForSEO.
Which rank-tracking API costs less?
Of the two above, DataForSEO's Standard Queue lists the lower per-SERP price ($0.60 per 1,000, checked 2026-09-28), but results are queued. Compare with the live modes if you need results immediately.
Which option works best for feeding an LLM?
One that returns page text with the results, so your model reads content rather than snippets. Serpex does this in the same request. Brave offers an LLM Context endpoint. Other AI-oriented APIs are compared in our AI search API guide.
Do these prices include page content?
Only where the table says so. SerpApi returns the results page, not the content of the linked pages, and DataForSEO's SERP API prices above cover results pages only. Serpex charges 2 or 4 credits for search with page content, instead of 1.
